BWY Teacher Monica Burton BEM Honoured with Spirit of Sport and Recreation Award
The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) is delighted to announce Monica Burton BEM has been awarded the Spirit of Sport and Recreation Award by Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, at the Sport and Recreation Alliance’s AGM held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday 16 October.
Monica, who began teaching yoga in the 1980s, has dedicated her career to improving the lives of older adults through yoga. Her community outreach work included teaching yoga in day care centres and integrating her teaching into elderly care settings. In 2005, Monica developed the Yoga for the Third Age module for BWY, becoming a pioneer in training for yoga teachers working with older adults.
During more than a decade of volunteering with the BWY London Committee, Monica was instrumental in promoting yoga through free yoga events in Battersea Park and at a showcase at the Royal Albert Hall. She also played a key role in integrating yoga into the Central Council of Physical Recreation which is now the Sport and Recreation Alliance.
Reflecting on the award, Monica said: “This honour isn’t just for me, but for the incredible team at the BWY London committee. Together, we’ve worked tirelessly to bring yoga not only to the stage but into the lives of many people.”
