Monica Burton Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at London Sport Awards
British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) teacher Monica Burton has been recognised once again for her outstanding contribution to community health, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the London Sport Awards on Thursday 27 March 2025 at London’s Guildhall.
The prestigious award celebrates Monica’s decades of dedication to improving the physical and mental wellbeing of older adults through yoga. Her impact has been felt across BWY and beyond, from running remedial classes with Roxbourne Hospital to her voluntary work with BWY London, where she spearheaded a free yoga festival in Battersea Park and played a pivotal role in gaining recognition for yoga with the Sport and Recreation Alliance (formerly the Central Sports Council).
Monica has been instrumental in shaping BWY’s teacher training, inspiring and educating hundreds of yoga teachers through her in-service training programmes and the development of her Yoga for the Third Age module. This accolade is a fitting tribute to her lifelong passion for making yoga accessible to all.
The award was presented by stars of the London Lions basketball team, and Monica received a standing ovation as she took to the stage.
Reflecting on the honour, Monica said: “Yoga has been my life’s work, and to be recognised in this way is truly humbling. At 90, I still wake up every day inspired to teach because I see the incredible difference yoga makes – helping people move with ease, build confidence and find joy in their bodies. I believe everyone, no matter their age or ability, should have the opportunity to experience that.”
Emily Robinson, Chief Executive of London Sport, said: “The London Sport Awards celebrate the incredible individuals and organisations breaking down barriers to help Londoners lead healthier, more active lives. From local initiatives to city-wide programmes, their efforts are transforming communities through the power of sport and physical activity.”
