British Wheel of Yoga Urges Yoga Teachers To Check Cover
A third of yoga teachers do not have insurance, survey suggests
A recent survey by Insure4Sport suggests that around one in three UK yoga teachers do not hold their own dedicated insurance to cover their teaching practice.
While the survey sample is small, the finding reflects a pattern insurers see regularly: claims relating to student injuries, slips and falls, or alleged negligence can run into tens of thousands of pounds. Without appropriate cover, teachers are personally liable for any compensation and legal costs that result.
Even where insurance is not a legal requirement, studios, councils, landlords and event organisers increasingly expect yoga teachers to provide proof of public liability and professional indemnity cover before allowing them to use their space.
First aid training is a closely linked issue. Insurance policies typically will not cover a claim if an injury occurs while no trained first aider is present. Holding a current First Aid certificate is therefore an important part of keeping cover valid should an incident arise.
To help address this gap, the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) offers an Associate Teaching Membership designed specifically for teachers who want proper protection without unnecessary cost or complexity.
For £108 a year, teachers with over 300 hours of training through a reputable school can:
- Access comprehensive teaching insurance, including public liability and professional indemnity cover
- Meet best-practice expectations around first aid and risk management
- Draw on hundreds of resources to support their teaching, including free CPD, guidance documents, templates and marketing tools
Whether currently teaching, returning to teaching, or just starting out, the survey findings serve as a useful prompt for yoga teachers to check they have the right cover in place.
